Il progetto si basa sulla volontà di individuare una soluzione atta ad arricchire lo skyline di Marghera [VE], prevedendo la realizzazione di un edificio che si possa presentare quale elemento di identificazione comune per i futuri utenti.

Esso affronta in particolare il tema della connessione-transizione fra densità urbana e spazi verdi.

1. Inquadramento
Il progetto per l’edificio di uffici si presenta come nuovo landmark, limite costruito tra la città industriale di Marghera e la città storica di Venezia. L’orditura delle lame–torri, perpendicolare alla via di transito che conduce al ponte translagunare, rende l’architettura visibile nello skyline di Marghera.

2. Carattere
Il progetto consiste nell’accostamento di lame-torri alte circa 35 Mt.
La stretta commistione e prossimità delle diverse funzioni fa di questo un luogo speciale, senza pregiudicare in alcun modo l’autonomia di ciascuna attività.

3. Percezione
Le facciate delle lame-torri avranno aperture capaci di disegnare un nuovo paesaggio urbano.

4. Movimento
L’edificio ottimizza il trasporto commerciale e quello privato, i flussi veicolari e pedonali.

5. Tecnica
Per ottimizzare gli spessori edilizi e la resa energetica, la struttura portante è all’interno e il passaggio degli impianti all’interno dello spessore dei solai.

Complex Building
1,052 m2

The façade of the building is covered with planters made of aluminum die-cast panels, which provides space for facilities. The 3 (up to 6) aluminum panels, which also form planters, are made in monoblock casting. Each panel is slanted, and its surface appears to be organic, of which cast comes from decayed styrene foam. Equipment such as watering hose, air reservoir for ventilation and downpipes are installed behind the panels so that the façade can accommodate a comprehensive system for the building.

The structure will be built in a strategic area of the historic quarter EUR on a 55,000-square-meter  built surface. The design concept is briefly explained by three images: the ”Theca”, the ”Cloud” and the ”blade” of the Hotel.

The ”Theca”, longitudinally oriented, is the container, with steel structure and glass double-facade, that encloses the Cloud.

The ”Cloud” is the heart of the project. Its constriction into the ”box” of the Theca underlines the comparison between a free spatial articulation, without rules, and a geometrically defined shape. Inside the Cloud there are: an auditorium for 1850 people, snack points and support services to the auditorium. The Cloud is, without any doubt, the distinctive architectural element of the project: the structure in steel ribs, with its extraordinary visual effect, will be covered by a 15,000-square-meter transparent curtain. The 441-room hotel, the ”blade”, is thought as an independent and autonomous structure. At the underground level of the complex it’s planned a 600-place parking.
The New Congress Centre will be a work of extraordinary artistic value, characterized by innovative logistical solutions and by the choice of technologically advanced materials.

The complex will be highly flexible, able to host congresses, exhibition events, with a capacity that will reach a total of nearly 9,000 seats, divided between the auditorium inside the Cloud, that could accommodate 1,850 people, and large conference rooms totalling 6,500 seats. The design of the New Congress Centre is distinguished by its eco-friendly approach, that is a group of choices to reduce energy consumption.
There will be a climate control system with variable flow air conditioning, that will allow an optimal use of energy, with respect to the effective crowding of the rooms; on the cover of the Theca there will be photovoltaic elements that will allow a natural production of electricity and the protection of the building from the overheating, through the mitigation of the solar radiation, as well as allowing a significant energetic saving compared to those required to obtain the air-conditioning of the whole volume with traditional systems.

Monument

We were asked to create a monument in a road roundabout in Casalgrande, an area of Reggio Emilia known for its great tradition and technology for ceramics. This roundabout is surrounded by the beautiful landscape characteristic of that part of Italy.

We took the challenge of involving the ceramic tile as an architectural element itself, avoiding its conventional use as a mere cladding.

Just after developing a specific detail of how to panel and connect standard ceramic tiles, we understood the possibilities of how to assembly and organize them creating different structures.

With this unique structure we wanted to avoid creating a monument that stands in the middle of the site: we wanted it to become part of the site. Therefore we decided to create a wall that simply divides the site in two making it a special place with a dual character, far from the usual and banal roundabouts. Our anti-monumental approach went far enough to decide aligning the direction of the ceramic wall with the road that leads to it so as to make it almost disappear: when reaching the site, drivers will only perceive a roundabout divided by a vertical line. Only when going around it, along the movement of the car the wall extends until appearing with its whole length of 45 meters.

In our buildings we usually work with concepts of anti-dimension or anti-volume but in a project like this with such an especial site (a roundabout only approachable by cars) we wanted to experiment on these concepts’ relationship with dynamic principles such as time, movement and sequential perception.

Seeing this wall growing during its months of construction, we realized how dynamically its light structure’s transparency and the subtle reflection of its fine glazed white ceramic where interacting with the surrounding site and the weather. This other way of dynamism appeared to us as a very unique soft, light and ever-changing phenomena… and that is why we have called it Ceramic Cloud.

Future Shack

A mass produced relocatable house for emergency and relief housing. Recycled shipping containers are used to form the main volume of the building. A parasol roof packs inside the container. When erected, the roof shades the container and reduces heat load on the building. Legs telescope from the container enabling it to sited without excavation on uneven terrain.

This house has applications for a variety of needs – post flood, fire, earthquake or similar natural disasters, temporary housing, third world housing, remote housing and so on. The universal nature of the container means that the houses can be stockpiled and easily transported throughout the world. The Future Shack can be fully erected in 24 hours.
As architects in stable democracies our responsibilities are reasonably clear cut. Our role in those societies where freedom has been ripped away by force, or where nature has devastated whole cities, or when generations of minority groups have been forced into a life of poverty because of a political philosophy, is hazy by comparison. The need ‘to house’, born out of the adversity of war offers for architects the opportunity to provide shelter for fellow human beings in need. To that end our building provides:

1. Mass Production
Steel shipping containers are robust and durable. They are a mass produced and inexpensive universal module which forms the basis of this design.

2. Flexibility
As a base module the containers can be stockpiled for use on an ‘as required’ basis. They are designed to be transported by trucks and ships and trains- all infrastructure for the handling of the module is available world wide.

3. Ease of siting
Packed inside the container is a pair of steel brackets which are fixed to the outside of the container. Inside the brackets are four legs which telescope out and which can therefore enable the module to be sited without the need for extensive site preparation.

4. Self Contained
Also packed within the container are water tanks, solar power cell, satellite receiver, roof access ladder, container access ramp and parasol roof. The basic container is also modified to provide thermal insulation to R4.0 and to allow through a series of openable vents the free flow of fresh air.

5. Ablution
Each module has the capacity to be fitted with bathroom /kitchen depending upon local requirements.

6. Parasol Roof
The parasol roof provides a universal symbol of home. It also shelters the roof of the module, providing a thermal cushion between the module and direct solar radiation as well as a contained and protected outdoor space. The roof panels provide a shading co-efficient of 0.49 and can be interchanged with indigenous materials such as thatch, mud and stick, palm leaves and so on.

7. Mobile + Reusable
Future Shack can be packed back into itself and relocated or stockpiled for future use.
It is therefore legitimately described as fully recyclable fully self sustainable architecture.
Time required for assembly on site – 24 hours.
